The JW/MA Fashion Jewelry Award @ Drexel University

Congratulations to Yi Deng, the winner of the fourth annual John Wind/Maximal Art Fashion Jewelry Award-- awarded for the most effective use of jewelry in a collection. In other words, the designer doesn't have to be a jewelry maker; it's more about great styling and understanding the power and impact jewelry can have on a fashion collection.
As you can see from across the runway, Yi made a major statement with her oversized earrings!  They perfectly balanced her bold, sculptural clothes, and while they're not necessarily practical, that clearly wasn't the point… To me it was more about an exploration of texture, of shape, of proportion, and of what is modern now.  I take my hat off to the designer for this confident, beautifully executed collection!
(and in doing a little research, I learned that last year Yi won Drexel's Geoffrey Beene Design Scholarship of $25,000! So lets all keep an eye out for what's next for Yi Deng…)
